The African Elephant is the largest land animal on the planet.  These massive creatures roam the plains and forests of Africa searching for food, sometimes spending as much as 18-22 hours a day eating.  Living in large groups, called herds, female elephants carry their young for 22 months. Calves can weigh over 250 pounds at birth!  The Memphis Zoo's three female elephants can be found in the African Veldt exhibit.
